Explaining What A Slider Food Is For WLS Patients

blog-0383607001368927394 If you have had weight loss surgery then I am sure you have heard the term “Slider Foods”. But what exactly is a slider food, why should we avoid them? Slider foods are often convenience foods or foods that are loaded with salt or calories that offer no nutritional benefit to keep us feeling full. Often times slider foods will also cause weight loss plateaus, dumping syndrome and sometimes weight gain. Often slider foods are known as convenience foods, or foods we turn too when in a hurry and do not have time to grab something healthier.

Slider foods are essentially soft foods that are usually loaded with carbs and offer little to no nutrional benefits to you. Some common slider foods are popcorn, chips, crackers, tortilla chips, cakes, cookies and candies to name a few. When weight loss patients eat slider foods you will notice you get hungry much more quicker than a normal person, because these foods literally will slide through your pouch. Thus leaving you feeling hungry and then you tend to eat more to get that full feeling. For weight loss patients whom consume slider foods often they might start to see their weight either plataue or even start to gain weight, because you are eating twice as much just to get that full feeling you would normally get from eating heartier foods. When this starts to happen patients might even think that their pouch is failing or that the surgery was not worth it, when in reality when you eat protein rich foods your pouch will stay full longer. Then you are not overeating to get that full feeling.

When you eat the proper foods your pouch will maintain that full or tight feeling making you feel satisfied and full. However when eating slider foods, this full or tightness will not happen and you will not get that full feeling allowing you to overeat. The golden rule for WLS patients is to eat your protein first, the reason for this is your protein items will stay in your pouch longer and help keep you full for a much longer period of time. Below is a list of common slider foods that you should avoid.

  • Tortilla chips
  • pretzels
  • crackers
  • cakes and cookies
  • pudding
  • ice cream
  • gelatins
  • soups
  • chilli
  • smoothies
  • applesauces
