Healthy Breakfast Options In Less Than Five Minutes

FruitQuinoa One of the most important things I learned prior to surgery was how important eating a healthy breakfast was for you. This is something I have been guilty of for years, for a long time I would skip breakfast because I would stay up so late at night eating that I was never hungry in the morning. To the point that I would actually get nausea if I did try to eat breakfast in the morning. But after going my nutrition classes and going to my nutrition support groups I learned how not eating breakfast can actually help you gain more weight.

By eating a healthy breakfast in the morning this helps you boost your metabolism and get you started on burning more calories which will help in your journey in weight loss. The one thing I learned was it is best to eat your breakfast no later than 90 minutes after you wake up, this will start your body waking up and burning calories to help you in your journey of weight loss. When you fail to eat breakfast and do what I did and wait to eat until the afternoon you not only slow down your metabolism hence not allowing your body to burn calories as fast but you are also setting yourself to have uncontrollable hunger and cravings later on in the day. This was one of my things during my life where I would have horrible cravings for all the horrible things that I did not need like the sugary or salty foods that only added to my weight gain.

Now I never skip breakfast but I am still guilty of stopping and getting something on the run and sometimes it is not always the best option for me. So below I put together some healthier breakfast options especially if you are like me and working and always on the run. Eating breakfast after surgery becomes even more important because you need alot of protein throughout the day and it is crucial to your weight loss.

Healthy Quick Breakfast Options:

  • Eggs are your best friend after surgery, they are high in protein so easy to make and a good friend to you after weight loss surgery. It takes around two minutes to make a simple scrambled egg that is packed full of protein and low in calories.
  • Avocado with toast this is a great QUICK option for if you need to eat in a hurry, take two slices of whole grain toast and top with smashed avocado and maybe some salt and pepper. To get even more protein add a sunny side egg for a meal in less than 5 minutes that is quick and full of nutrition.
  • Peanut butter and banana toast this is another great option take some whole grain toast and spread with a low calorie and low fat peanut butter which is high in protein and then top off with some slices of banana.
  • Scrambled eggs with some veggies is another great quick option for breakfast, usually I will save left over veggies that I used for dinner and use these for a quick breakfast option. Just add them to your scrambled eggs in the morning and you have a quick yet delicious meal for the morning in under 5 minutes.
  • Fruit and Yogurt parfaits, while McDonald’s offers one of these I found it is easier to make your own because then you are in control of your calories and it does not take but a few minutes of your time to make one. I use Greek yogurt as my base because Greek yogurt is much higher in protein than your regular yogurt, now add some fresh fruit like strawberries or blueberries and top off with some granola and you have protein packed breakfast in less than 5 minutes.
  • I love breakfast burritos and I found this easy and quick recipe that I am going to be trying this week, just scramble up two egg whites, add 1/4 cup of black beans and two tablespoons of salsa and 2 tablespoons of shredded cheese and once the eggs are cooked simply add to a whole wheat tortilla. Make a couple of these and you can wrap in foil and put in your fridge and heat up in the microwave. These are a protein punched breakfast between the eggs and beans.
  • Smoothies these were my staple for so long and are awesome for super busy mornings on the run. The secret is using Greek yogurt again because Greek yogurt is so much higher in protein than your regular based yogurt, also for a double punch of protein you can add one scoop of protein powder. The way that I make mine is to take 1 cup of Greek Yogurt in a blender and add a handful of fresh fruit your options of endless from bananas, to strawberries to blueberries, peaches just whatever you have on hand laying around. Now add some low fat milk another great source of protein and mix up. You can even make this up the night before and put into your glass and then in the morning before you get ready for work throw this in the freezer for a thicker consistency. These are packed full of protein and a great way to have breakfast on the go, I would drink it on the way to work.
  • Waffle on the go, if you are in a real hurry take a Nutri Grain waffle and toast it in the toaster then add some low fat peanut butter for your protein and top it off with some fresh fruit like strawberries or bananas.
